Princess Party Fancy Dress Ideas
Use a leotard as a base for your princess fancy dress & add sleeves, a skirt & a sash:
How To Make A Princess Fancy Dress Sleeve
Cut out two rectangles, 24 inches x 30 inches (the 2nd measurement depends on the length of the child’s arm) from floaty material.
Sew two loose lines of stitches across one width (24 inches) & pull ends gently to gather. Pin to shoulder of leotard & sew or tack. Repeat with the other sleeve.
How To Make A Princess Skirt
To make a princess fancy dress skirt, fold a piece of shiny lining material measuring 60 inches x 50 inches in half lengthways so that it now measures 60 inches x 25 inches.
Using either a compass & pencil or a length of string with a pen tied at one end & a drawing pin at the other, draw two semi circles with the aid of the drawing below. From one end of the fold, measure in 25 inches. This will be the centre of your circle. Mark with a pen or piece of chalk. Measure 25 inches along the string from the nib of the pen & put the pin into the string & then into the mark you made for the centre of the circle – you may want to put a piece of card or blu tac underneath the pin to protect the work surface. Holding the pin in place & pulling the string taut, gently draw a large semi circle – go carefully as the material may ruck up.
Remove the drawing pin & this time measure 4 inches from the pen. Place the pin back in the centre of the circle & draw the smaller semi circle.
Using the fold of the material, draw a rectangle for the waistband 13 inches x 2 inches. Cut out the waistband & skirt.
With right sides together, pin the waistband to the top of the skirt. You will need to gather the material in places but leave an overlap of 1cm at each end of the waistband to make a hem. Sew.
Fold the waistband material in half, wrong sides together, to cover the seam you have just made. Either fold & iron the edge of the material to create a neat edge, zigzag stitch or leave as is. Pin & sew, leaving an opening either end.
Cut a piece of elastic to fit the child’s waist. Put a safety pin through one end of the elastic & pin to one end of the waistband. Put a safety pin through the other end of the elastic & use to thread the elastic through the waistband, gently straightening the material as it bunches up. Once the elastic has come out of the other end of the waistband, remove the safety pins & sew the two ends of the elastic together with an overlap of approx. 1 inch. Tuck the ends of the waistband in to make a neat edge & sew the two ends together.
How To Make A Princess Cone Hat
Draw a quarter of a circle on pink card with a radius of around 16 inches (41cm) using a pencil tied to a piece of string or a wide compass. Cut out – if making one for all the guests, use your first as a template. Cut a small bit off the point of the hat to allow for the veil.
Using your quarter circle as a template, cut out a veil from tissue paper or muslin. Attach the point of the material to the now not so pointy tip of the hat using tape or glue. They should point in opposite directions >< as this is the inside of the hat & the veil will be coming out of the top & draping down the outside.
Streamers can be used instead of a veil. Cut out 5 strips from tissue or crepe paper which are longer than the hat. Attach in the same way as the veil.
Roll the hat into a cone & staple at the bottom. Glue or tape along the seam.
Punch a hole on either side of the cone near the base & thread elastic through. Tie either end. Decorate with ribbon, sequins, jewels & stickers.
How To Make A Princess Tiara
Cut a band of card approx. 1 inch wide. Measure around the head & tape/staple/glue in the correct place. Cut strips of foil about 2 inches wide & roll & squeeze into sticks. Form into arches & tape onto the inside of the band – the foil can be shaped into hearts or swirls if preferred. Decorate the outside of the band with stickers, foam shapes, felt tips etc. For a tiara with a scallop edge, use the tiara template.
How To Make A Princess Sceptre
Push a wooden dowelling rod (between 12 & 24 inches long) into a polystyrene ball. Spray gold or if preferred, cover them both separately  in silver foil before inserting. Decorate with jewels.
